Wow! Certainly the sky is the limit! There are just so many tools. Don’t forget, however, that your productivity suite, such as Open Libre Office or MS Office, provide you with the most common and accessible tools for authoring. Nearly everyone starts off authoring in a word processor or presentations package!
Then you can build up to use more sophisticated packages according to what it is you need to do. As a school teacher I used to teach my students to author in a HTML editor so that we could share the results of their work on the Internet as web pages. Today I author mostly in a LMS such as Moodle.
