      The teacher must have deep knowledge of their subject's syllabus and the ability to apply it flexibly using ICT tools and resources.

      Specific Objectives: By the end of the unit you should be able to:

      1. Access digital resources and use them to support learning
      2. Evaluate a selection of digital teaching and learning resources in line with the set curriculum standards
      3. Use ICT Tools to develop lesson plans that align the digital resources to the teaching and learning goals as articulated in the set curriculum standards

  • Accessing the Digital Curriculum

    • Recommended time: 45 minutes

    •  Sub-Unit Competency: Finding Resources to Support Curriculum Statements

      In this sub-unit we will use the Internet to download digital versions of the curriculum. We will use the national curriculum statements to help us identify appropriate digital tools.

    • Activity 1: Source the Curriculum Statements

      1. Use the links below to access digital versions of Kenyan Primary School curriculum documents and identify the sections you teach.
      1. Read through the syllabus. Identify the broad subject goals and priorities rather than the content specific goals. For example in the Kenya Primary Education Syllabus documents they have a section on 'Objectives of Primary Education' & 'General Objectives' for each subject.
      2. In the chat room below, entitled 'ICT and Curriculum' discuss generally how ICT might be used to support yourself in preparing the syllabus for use in your classroom.
      1. In the forum below, entitled 'Curriculum' create a thread for your subject/grade and then list what you believe are the overarching values that shape the curriculum. (Don't list specific objectives such as content or skills). Once complete reply to your colleagues posts.

  • Matching Resources to Syllabus Objectives

    • Recommended time: 70 minutes

    •  Sub-unit Competency: Matching the resources, tools and syllabus objectives
      As part of the previous sub-units you may have identified a few digital teaching resources that you could use in your teaching, but do they satisfy the objectives as stipulated in the syllabus? In this final activity we will reflect to what extent specific teaching and learning resources achieve the set objectives. Once complete you will be able to match digital resources to curriculum objectives.

    • Portfolio Assignment: Matching resources to objectives

      1. Re-enter the forum we used at the start, entitled 'Curriculum', and review what you had identified as your subjects' syllabus objectives.
      1. How would you use the resources you reviewed in the previous sub-units so that these objectives could be achieved? Write a one page document in MS Word (Font 12 point) describing how the resources could be used to achieve the syllabus objectives. This document will be a collected as a portfolio item so use the assignment upload tool below entitled 'Portfolio Item #2 Submission' to submit it.
